Each Saturday, we're going to be featuring a different small business owner or content creator! Getting our content, products, and voices out there to the world can be tough, so creating an inclusive and supportive community is incredibly important. As a small business owner myself, lending a helping hand to others is a key part of our business plan - we want to give back to the community that has been so key to our success!
Our sixth installment is with JediMeg16 who has been creating handmade goods from various fandoms since 2009 under her business name of Meg's Crafty Creations!
Let's start with an introduction!
I’m a crafter and cosplayer from the Chicago area. I’m also married and a mom of two boys. My @jedimeg16 account is primarily for cosplay and showing off the nerdy things I buy from other artists. My @megscraftycreations account is focused on my craft business.
What are your favorite fandoms?
Star Wars, Disney, Stargate SG-1, and Broadway musicals
When and why did you start your business?
In early 2009 I found myself in a quit or get fired position at my last outside of the home job and decided to quit. A few weeks later I partnered with a friend who had an artist table at a convention I was attending and I had a few extra amigurumis to sell. When they sold out mid day on Saturday I realized that I potentially had a viable business plan, and now about 12 1/2 years later I’m still creating so many fun items.
What products do you sell?
Crocheted amigurumis (small, cute plush), embroidered keychains, and sewn purses and accessories
Where do you sell your products?
Primarily in person at conventions and geeky craft shows, but also via DM and Square invoices until I get my Etsy shop up and running.
What have been some of the lessons (both good and bad) that you've learned since starting your business?
Just because someone is making and selling similar items to what you make, everyone has a unique style and there is room for everyone. Get to know other artists because you can make so many great friends!
What has been your favorite product or product line to work on and why?
My little sea creatures because it’s fun to adapt all of these different aquatic animals into a small blob form, because they are adorable.
What is your favorite fandom to work on?
Star Wars, but I also love creating original works like the sea creatures.
What has been your most popular product?
Anything with tentacles!
What is one product you wish got more love?
Some of my larger items, like the purses and custom plush
What is your favorite social media platform to use and why?
I tend to use Facebook the most, but I like Instagram too
Where else can we find you on social media?
Meg’s Crafty Creations on Facebook, @megscraftycreations on IG
Is there anything else we should know about you or your business?
My whole family helps out with my business - my husband attends conventions with me and will assemble many of the amigurumis and my boys help with counting my inventory in between events so that I know what to restock and they help test new products.
